  • How to Hope: Lessons from the Israelites and Their Messianic Expectation, Part 34
    TEXT: Psalm 72
First, Jesus’ reign will be a reign of compassion. Psalms 72:12-15 says, “For he shall deliver the needy when he crieth; the poor also, and him that hath no helper. He shall spare the poor and needy, and shall save the souls of the needy. He shall redeem their soul from deceit and violence: and precious shall their blood be in his sight. And he shall live, and to him shall be given of the gold of Sheba: prayer also shall be made for him continually; and daily shall he be praised.” When you go through the Gospels and look at Jesus’ ministry, you will see that he had a heart for the weary, the poor, the downtrodden, and oppressed. When the sick and disabled came to him and asked to be made whole, he was always willing to help them. He told the rich to give their belongings to the poor. Charles Spurgeon said, “Here is an excellent reason for man's submission to the Lord Christ; it is not because they dread his overwhelming power, but because they are won over by his just and condescending rule. Who would not fear so good a Prince, who makes the needy his peculiar care, and pledges himself to be their deliverer in times of need? When he crieth. He permits them to be so needy as to be driven to cry bitterly for help, but then he hears them, and comes to their aid. A child's cry touches a father's heart, and our King is the Father of his people. If we can do no more than cry it will bring omnipotence to our aid. A cry is the native language of a spiritually needy soul; it has done with fine phrases and long orations, and it takes to sobs and moans; and so, indeed, it grasps the most potent of all weapons, for heaven always yields to such artillery. The poor also, and him that hath no helper. The proverb says, "God helps those that help themselves; "but it is yet more true that Jesus helps those who cannot help themselves, nor find help in others. All helpless ones are under the especial care of Zion's compassionate King; let them hasten to put themselves in fellowship with him. Let them look to him, for he is looking for them.” We can look around us and see that the world is badly in need of Christlike compassion. According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, as of January 2019, there are 70.8 million refugees worldwide, displaced by war, economic hardship, government oppression, or natural disasters. When we see the tears of pain in the eyes of the world, we can take comfort in knowing that Jesus will come to wipe them away.

About Gospel Light Society Podcasts

From the publisher's feed

Gospel Light Society is a global ministry that seeks to present the Gospel to all people, in every language, around the world, over the internet. People all over the world need to hear about the love, peace, and joy that only comes through Jesus Christ. For many people, they are not free to practice their Christian beliefs in their country. For others, they do not feel comfortable in a public place of worship. Because of this, millions of people search for God on the internet. In many languages, GLS seeks to share the Gospel of Christ to those who contact us and then help them to grow in the saving knowledge of Jesus by connecting them with a church or a home Bible study group.
