  • Fourth Down in Life is Analogous to a Tough Decision: To Go For It or Punt (#8)
My name is Daniel Whyte III, and welcome to the God Receives Glory Even From Football podcast #8. This podcast is based off of my new book of the same name. I wrote the book because I believe out of all the national sports God has received more glory and praise from American football over the past one hundred years than all of the other sports combined. This episode is chapter seven of the book, titled "Fourth Down in Life is Analogous to a Tough Decision: To Go For It or Punt."
Theodore Roosevelt said “In any moment of decision, the best thing you can do is the right thing, the next best thing is the wrong thing, and the worst thing you can do is nothing.”
I Kings 18:21 says “And Elijah came unto all the people, and said, How long halt ye between two opinions? if the LORD be God, follow him: but if Baal, then follow him.”
The fourth down decision is probably what most coaches get paid their huge salaries for even though it is a decision that comes quite often in the game. However, each fourth down decision is consequential and impacts the end result of the game. Of course, there are some fourth down decisions that have not only changed a game but have changed football history down through the years. Coaches have been fired for making the wrong fourth down decision. Coaches have been hired or have received extensions for making the right fourth down decisions. For you see, a lot goes into a fourth down decision. One of the things that is in the mix is that great coaches know their teams like the back of their hands. And they know if they have the heart to go for the 4th and 4 that would give them a new first down or whether or not they have a team of guys who need to punt and gain better field positions to defend their goal line. Like a Mozart can not only read and write music but can hear the music, the great coaches know the X's and the O's very well in the playbook, but they have the uncanny ability to “hear” the right call on fourth down plays or decisions. This separates, if you will, the great coaches and the not-so-great coaches.
At some point in your adult life you are going to be called upon to make the fourth down decisions of life. And if you are a true adult these decisions are going to come quite often. We live in a day and time where most people hate to make these everyday fourth down decisions. Today, we have a thing called “adulting”; something that we have never heard of before. In other words, there are adults who do not like doing adult things much less making the fourth down decisions of life. But if you are going to get over the bridge of troubled waters and make it safely to the other side you are going to have to bite the bullet and make the fourth down decisions of life. The ball is in your court. It's your call. What are you going to do? Mildew or barbecue? Whatever you do, make the best decision possible and be prepared to live with it.

  • How to Overcome Temptation, Part 126 (Envy) (Onward Christian Soldiers #250)
    Proverbs 3:31-35
In this passage, we are told to not be envious of the oppressor, and not to choose any of his ways. History shows us that one of the ways to enrich yourself is by oppressing others. On the small scale, and unjust landlord or a cruel loan shark may enrich themselves by oppressing their tenants or debtors. On the large scale, many nations have enriched themselves through conquering other nations, or through slavery or economic exploitation. Despite the opportunities that come with oppressing others, Solomon warns us not to do so, and tells us why.

About Gospel Light Society Podcasts

From the publisher's feed

Gospel Light Society is a global ministry that seeks to present the Gospel to all people, in every language, around the world, over the internet. People all over the world need to hear about the love, peace, and joy that only comes through Jesus Christ. For many people, they are not free to practice their Christian beliefs in their country. For others, they do not feel comfortable in a public place of worship. Because of this, millions of people search for God on the internet. In many languages, GLS seeks to share the Gospel of Christ to those who contact us and then help them to grow in the saving knowledge of Jesus by connecting them with a church or a home Bible study group.
