GOSPEL POWER | AUGUST 22, 2021 - 21st Sunday in Ordinary Time
1st Reading: Jos 24:1-2a, 15-17, 18b
Responsorial Psalm: Ps 34 – Taste and see the goodness of the Lord.
2nd Reading: Eph 5:21-32 (or Eph 5:2a, 25-32)
Gospel: Jn 6:60-69
When many of the disciples of Jesus heard it, they said, “This teaching is difficult; who can accept it?” But Jesus, being aware that his disciples were complaining about it, said to them, “Does this offend you? Then what if you were to see the Son of Man ascending to where he was before? It is the spirit that gives life; the flesh is useless. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life. But among you there are some who do not believe.” For Jesus knew from the first who were the ones that did not believe, and who was the one that would betray him. And he said, “For this reason I have told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted by the Father.” Because of this many of his disciples turned back and no longer went about with him. So Jesus asked the twelve, “Do you also wish to go away?” Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom can we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and know that you are the Holy One of God.”
Reflection:
Jesus neither asks nor expects us to understand first before accepting what he has revealed. He knows that the human mind, unenlightened by the Spirit, has no capacity to grasp the things from above. Faith is what activates a mode of understanding which is not of the mind, but of the heart. What Jesus asks is that we trust him and turn our lives over to him like little children. Through that relationship-of-trust, the Spirit of Jesus can enkindle in us the kind of faith that gave Peter and his companions the certainty that only Jesus had the words of eternal life. And this is the kind of faith that we need today in a world where life, at times, feels like sand shifting under our feet. This faith grounds us on a secure future whose guarantee is Jesus’ words of eternal life
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, in you we rest securely, for you embody God’s fidelity in a world where fidelity is wanting. Amen
