GOSPEL POWER | AUGUST 31, 2021 - Tuesday - 22nd Week in Ordinary Time
1st Reading: 1 Thes 5:1-6, 9-11
Responsorial Psalm: Ps 27 – I believe that I shall see the good things of the Lord in the land of the living.
Gospel: Lk 4:31-37
Jesus went down to Capernaum, a city in Galilee, and was teaching them on the sabbath. They were astounded at his teaching, because he spoke with authority. In the synagogue there was a man who had the spirit of an unclean demon, and he cried out with a loud voice, “Let us alone! What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are, the Holy One of God.” But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be silent, and come out of him!” When the demon had thrown him down before them, he came out of him without having done him any harm. They were all amazed and kept saying to one another, “What kind of utterance is this? For with authority and power he commands the unclean spirits, and out they come!” And a report about him began to reach every place in the region.
Reflection:
The entire Scripture attests to the presence of evil spirits who try to sabotage the work of God. They are intelligent beings, and they know that Jesus is the Messiah (Lk 4:41). As Jesus expels a demon from the man that it inhabits, the demon responds by revealing Jesus’ identity — “the Holy One of God.” This premature revelation, and coming from an ally of the prince of lies, is dangerous, because it appeals only to the human fascination with what is spectacular. In God’s plan, Jesus is to be revealed and recognized as the Messiah not only through his authoritative preaching and powerful deeds of healing and exorcism, but most especially through the unimaginable love and forgiveness to be displayed on the cross.
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, we too will only begin to understand, and experience your Messiahship by contemplating the cross and accepting it as part of our own life. Amen.
