GOSPEL POWER - DECEMBER 1, 2020 - TUESDAY - 1ST WEEK OF ADVENT
Gospel: Lk 10:21-24 21
At that same hour Jesus rejoiced in the Holy Spirit and said, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and the intelligent and have revealed them to infants; yes, Father, for such was your gracious will. All things have been handed over to me by my Father; and no one knows who the Son is except the Father, or who the Father is except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him.” Then turning to the disciples, Jesus said to them privately, “Blessed are the eyes that see what you see! For I tell you that many prophets and kings desired to see what you see, but did not see it, and to hear what you hear, but did not hear it.”
REFLECTION
God turned upside-down the chosen nation’s expectations regarding the coming of the Davidic Messiah. Instead of appearing in royal grandeur, he was born in a poor stable, grew up in a remote village, and took up the lowly occupation of a carpenter. When he appeared in public, he was not only unrecognized, but was even suspected as a troublemaker by those who were experts in the Scriptures and who presumed to know the signs of the Messiah’s royal arrival. God’s ways are not the ways of human beings. In today’s Gospel, Jesus rejoices to see how divine wisdom favors the poor and the little ones of this world. His simple, mostly uneducated disciples are favored with the revelation which the elite religious leaders missed. For God darkens the minds of those who pretend to know and sheds light on those who are aware and admit that they know nothing.
PRAYER
Lord Jesus, deliver us from the illusion that we can acquire Kingdom knowledge through personal effort. May we rather open our hearts to receive it as a gift. Amen.
