GOSPEL POWER - DECEMBER 24, 2020 - THURSDAY
Gospel: Lk 1:67-79
Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke this prophecy: 68“Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, for he has looked favorably on his people and redeemed them. He has raised up a mighty savior for us in the house of his servant David, as he spoke through the mouth of his holy prophets from of old, 71that we would be saved from our enemies and from the hand of all who hate us. Thus he has shown the mercy promised to our ancestors, and has remembered his holy covenant, the oath that he swore to our ancestor Abraham, to grant us that we, being rescued from the hands of our enemies, might serve him without fear, in holiness and righteousness before him all our days. And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High; for you will go before the Lord to prepare his ways, to give knowledge of salvation to his people by the forgiveness of their sins. By the tender mercy of our God, the dawn from on high will break upon us, to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.”
REFLECTION
The silence experienced by Zechariah is not a fearful void, like a well-deserved punishment for doubting. Rather, it is a transitional emptiness that purifies his heart and prepares it to be filled up by the Holy Spirit. And now, as his tongue is set loose, the fullness of his heart overflows in a jubilant song of praise for the mystery that has been revealed to him in silence—the mystery of “God’s graciousness,” of which the name of his newborn son is a constant reminder. Silence has aligned Zechariah’s vision, and now he sees the bigger picture where the favor to beget a son in his old age fits like a piece of a jigsaw puzzle. God’s will to save is unstoppable. Neither the barrenness of an old woman nor the virginity of a teenaged girl can obstruct the sending of the promised Savior and of his forerunner. Salvation is at hand because God is faithful and keeps his promises.
PRAYER
Lord, help us to contemplate in silence today the mystery that we are about to celebrate on Christmas day. Amen.
