GOSPEL POWER - DECEMBER 5, 2020 - SATURDAY - 1ST WEEK OF ADVENT
Gospel: Mt 9:35–10:1, 5a, 6-8
Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, and proclaiming the good news of the kingdom, and curing every disease and every sickness. When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore ask the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest.” 1 Then Jesus summoned his twelve disciples and gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to cure every disease and every sickness. These twelve Jesus sent out with the following instructions: . . . “Go to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. As you go, proclaim the good news, ‘The kingdom of heaven has come near.’ Cure the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, cast out demons. You received without payment; give without payment.”
REFLECTION
Jesus is God-within our human nature. Thus, God is no stranger to our pain, loneliness and distress. When we say that Jesus is compassionate, we affirm that he suffers with us. And because the Eternal has united himself with us, his finite creatures, there will never be a moment when he is not with us in the miseries that we go through. Matthew’s Gospel specifically identifies him as the prophesied Emmanuel—“God-with-us.” In today’s Gospel, he lets his disciples participate in his compassion by empowering and sending them to respond to the miseries of the crowds. The Kingdom of God is a Kingdom of compassion, where we help to bear one another’s burdens and pains, and in doing so experience salvation together.
PRAYER
Lord Jesus, God-within our human nature, grant that we too may feel the beating of your compassionate heart and be moved by the miseries of humanity. Amen.
