GOSPEL POWER | FEBRUARY 8, 2021
MONDAY | 5TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME| Gospel: MK 6:53-56
When Jesus and his disciples had crossed over, they came to land at Gennesaret and moored the boat. When they got out of the boat, people at once recognized Jesus, and rushed about that whole region and began to bring the sick on mats to wherever they heard he was. And wherever he went, into villages or cities or farms, they laid the sick in the marketplaces, and begged him that they might touch even the fringe of his cloak; and all who touched it were healed.
REFLECTION
There is something odd in this summary report of Jesus’ healing ministry. The whole episode is dominated by the action, not of Jesus, but of the people of Gennesaret. What triggers the chain of activities is the people’s immediate recognition of Jesus as soon as he sets foot on their shore. The presence of Jesus transforms the inhabitants of the place into a united communityof-compassion, acting selflessly for the benefit of the sick in their neigborhood. Their concerted action recalls the four friends of the paralytic who tried all means to bring the man to Jesus (Mk 2:1- 12). The request to touch the tassel of Jesus’ cloak also recalls the faith-filled touch of the bleeding woman in Mk 5:25-29. Genuine faith unites, and God blesses the people’s sense of connectedness by granting the healing through the mere presence of his Son Jesus.
PRAYER
Lord Jesus, unite us in faith and form us into communities-ofcompassion that make a difference in our world often marked by apathy and self-centeredness. Amen.
