GOSPEL POWER - JANUARY 17, 2021 - SUNDAY
Gospel: Mk 10:13-16
People were bringing little children to him in order that he might touch them; and the disciples spoke sternly to them. But when Jesus saw this, he was indignant and said to them, “Let the little children come to me; do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of God belongs. Truly I tell you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will never enter it.” And he took them up in his arms, laid his hands on them, and blessed them.
REFLECTION
Weakness and powerlessness — a child’s state of vulnerability and insufficiency — draw God very close, because God is a provident and tender parent. “Kingdom of God” is the expression Jesus repeatedly uses to speak to us of God’s parental nurturing. It is the revelation of the nearness and intimacy of God, which can best be conveyed humanly by the image of a parent. To welcome this revelation, we need to be childlike, because childhood is the stage of dependence that is best suited for laying down the foundations of a trustful relationship. It is the stage of receptivity and openness to being taught and guided. To belong to the Kingdom is to entrust one’s life to God whom Jesus introduced as a caring Father. It entails putting down our adult defences and throwing ourselves with abandon into his loving embrace.
PRAYER
Lord Jesus, you became a child to show us the way to relate with God in full trust and abandon. Deliver us from the age-old illusions of autonomy and self-sufficiency. Amen.
