GOSPEL POWER - JANUARY 18, 2021 - MONDAY

Gospel: Mk 2:18-22

Now John’s disciples and the Pharisees were fasting; and people came and said to Jesus, “Why do John’s disciples and the disciples of the Pharisees fast, but your disciples do not fast?” Jesus said to them, “The wedding guests cannot fast while the bridegroom is with them, can they? As long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast. The days will come when the bridegroom is taken away from them, and then they will fast on that day. “No one sews a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old cloak; otherwise, the patch pulls away from it, the new from the old, and a worse tear is made. And no one puts new wine into old wineskins; otherwise, the wine will burst the skins, and the wine is lost, and so are the skins; but one puts new wine into fresh wineskins.”

REFLECTION

Jesus’ indirect reference to himself as the “bridegroom” may have shocked his Jewish hearers, for in the Hebrew Scriptures, that image is applied only to God. But we, presentday readers of the Gospel, have been prepared for it by Mark’s faithconfession that Jesus is not only the Messiah, but the Son of God (Mk 1:1). The long-awaited Kingdom of God is now present in the world in the person and ministry of Jesus, and this calls for celebration. Fasting, which signifies mourning and the observance of religious discipline, is quite inappropriate in a wedding banquet marked by festivity and abundance. In Jesus, God is manifesting himself and dealing with humankind in a totally new way that calls for a totally new mood and mode of responding.

PRAYER

Lord Jesus, your presence in our midst is now the new determinant of whether we should feast or fast. May we fast primarily from sin that we may never drive you away from our midst. Amen.
