GOSPEL POWER - JANUARY 19, 2021 - TUESDAY
Gospel: Mk 2:23-28
One sabbath Jesus was going through the grainfields; and as they made their way his disciples began to pluck heads of grain. The Pharisees said to him, “Look, why are they doing what is not lawful on the sabbath?” And he said to them, “Have you never read what David did when he and his companions were hungry and in need of food? He entered the house of God, when Abiathar was high priest, and ate the bread of the Presence, which it is not lawful for any but the priests to eat, and he gave some to his companions.” Then he said to them, “The sabbath was made for humankind, and not humankind for the sabbath; so the Son of Man is lord even of the sabbath.”
REFLECTION
The context of this God episode seems to suggest that something is amiss. Why are the Pharisees in the field of grain on the day of the Sabbath? Jesus, it seems, is under surveillance. Thus, even his disciples’ simple act of pulling heads of grain and eating them as they make their way through the field is magnified into a serious Sabbath violation. But in fact, what is listed as work prohibited on the Sabbath is harvesting a field, which is obviously not what the disciples are up to. From this very first Sabbath controversy, Jesus already makes his stand clear. He will restore the original and true meaning of the Sabbath as a provision for the welfare of God’s creatures and not a slavish regulation that ignores their needs. For Jesus knows the heart and the intention of the Giver of this law.
PRAYER
Lord Jesus, help us to appreciate the Sunday rest — our Christian Sabbath — as an expression of God’s care for us and spend it in gratitude according to the intention of its Giver. Amen.
