GOSPEL POWER - JANUARY 21, 2021 - THURSDAY

SAINT AGNES, VIRGIN AND MARTYR

Gospel: Mk 3:7-12

Jesus departed with his disciples to the sea, and a great multitude from Galilee followed him;  hearing all that he was doing, they came to him in great numbers from Judea, Jerusalem, Idumea, beyond the Jordan, and the region around Tyre and Sidon.  He told his disciples to have a boat ready for him because of the crowd, so that they would not crush him; for he had cured many, so that all who had diseases pressed upon him to touch him. Whenever the unclean spirits saw him, they fell down before him and shouted, “You are the Son of God!” But he sternly ordered them not to make him known.

REFLECTION

At this point in Mark’s Gospel, the people see Jesus merely as a wonder-worker who can grant them what they need. The fact that they come in throngs and wildly press upon him to the point of crushing him manifest that they are not yet a community-of-faith capable of looking out for one another’s needs. Somehow, only the evil spirits have an inkling as to who Jesus is. But Jesus has to hush up the information, for it will only cause a misunderstanding of his mission. It is not his miracles and exorcisms that will reveal his identity as Messiah, but his suffering and death. Apart from the cross, his power as Son of God will not be understood as power to empty himself in self-sacrificing love — the ultimate revelation of who God is.

PRAYER

Lord Jesus, help us to enter into the mystery of divine power manifested in weakness and vulnerability. Amen.
