Gospel: Mk 3:20-21

And the crowd came together again, so that Jesus and his disciples could not even eat. When the family of Jesus heard it, they went out to restrain him, for people were saying, “He has gone out of his mind.”

REFLECTION

In one episode of John’s Gospel, Jesus tells his disciples, “My food is to do the will of the one who sent me” (Jn 4:34). While Jesus lived in the conditions of this world, he was driven by a force that lay beyond this world. His intimate relationship with his Father in heaven sustained him, and obedience was his very food. Today’s Gospel shows how superficially the relatives of Jesus knew him. Mary and Joseph had closely guarded the mystery which was to be revealed only in God’s time. To the other relatives who knew nothing of Jesus’ true origin nor of his trans-worldly mission, he appeared to be acting strangely. They could not understand the logic of selfless service and self-emptying love, for the compassionate ways of God appear to be weakness in the eyes of the world.

PRAYER

Lord Jesus, may we too discover how nourishing it is to our spirit to obey God’s will and accomplish the tasks he has entrusted to us. Amen.
