GOSPEL POWER - JANUARY 26, 2021 - TUESDAY
SAINTS TIMOTHY AND TITUS, BISHOPS
Gospel: Mk 3:31-35 (or Lk 10:1-9)
The mother of Jesus and his brothers came; and standing outside, they sent to him and called him. A crowd was sitting around him; and they said to him, “Your mother and your brothers and sisters are outside, asking for you.” And he replied, “Who are my mother and my brothers?” And looking at those who sat around him, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers! Whoever does the will of God is my brother and sister and mother.”
REFLECTION
Jesus is a practical teacher, rooted in the concreteness of everyday experiences. He allows every occasion to become an opportunity to help his disciples to shift from purely human values to the values of the Kingdom of God. One such occasion is the unexpected visit of members of his family while his disciples were gathered around him. He uses this occasion to teach them that the bonds created by obedience to the heavenly Father supersede blood ties. Although Jesus came to be part of a human family, the ultimate purpose of his coming into the world is to be the firstborn of God’s family, to generate through his ministry, passion, death and resurrection, believers whose distinguishing family trait is obedience to the Father’s will.
PRAYER
Lord Jesus, help us to develop a sense of detachment that will enable us to look beyond family matters to see and to respond to the bigger concerns of God’s Kingdom. Amen.
