GOSPEL POWER - JANUARY 28, 2021 - THURSDAY
SAINT THOMAS AQUINAS, PRIEST AND DOCTOR OF THE CHURCH
Gospel: Mk 4:21-25
Jesus said to the crowd, “Is a lamp brought in to be put under the bushel basket, or under the bed, and not on the lampstand? For there is nothing hidden, except to be disclosed; nor is anything secret, except to come to light. Let anyone with ears to hear listen!” And he said to them, “Pay attention to what you hear; the measure you give will be the measure you get, and still more will be given you. For to those who have, more will be given; and from those who have nothing, even what they have will be taken away.”
REFLECTION
Originally, this Gospel parable is intended to temper the overexcited expectations that God’s Kingdom would immediately appear in splendor and power, like a lamp placed high on a lampstand. Jesus promises that such expectations will be fulfilled at some indefinite future, but in the meantime, the Kingdom of God is present as a concealed reality in his own person and ministry. To accept this already present but not yet fully unveiled reality, Jesus exhorts his disciples… and all of us today, to keep the ears of our hearts attuned to him.
PRAYER
Lord Jesus, we trust in your promise of the Kingdom’s future unveiling, for you are the embodiment of God’s faithfulness. Amen.
