GOSPEL POWER | JULY 15, 2021 | THURSDAY | Saint Bonaventure, Bishop and Doctor of the Church 15th Week in Ordinary Time
Gospel: Mt 11: 28 – 30
Jesus said, “Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”
Reflection
Today’s Gospel is a continuation of what was proclaimed in yesterday’s liturgy. By inviting us, “Learn from me,” Jesus wants to impart to us this fruit of his prayer — in trusting the Father’s plan, everything in life falls into place. Nothing can be regarded as mere accident or chance. Rather, every event is being directed toward achieving God’s purposes. One simply has to align one’s will with the divine and to let God be God in one’s life. Such is the “yoke” of Jesus — perfect obedience and synergy with the Father. It is “easy” because it has been fashioned out of trust. Trusting the Father lightens every burden, because the Father has the complete picture of reality, of which we see but a tiny portion. By allowing ourselves to be led by the hand, we can be certain of fulfilling our life’s purpose.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, help us to understand that in the logic of the Kingdom, asserting autonomy leads only to frustration of our life’s purpose. Lead us in the way of childlike trust. Amen
