GOSPEL POWER | JULY 21, 2021 | WEDNESDAY | Saint Lawrence of Brindisi, Priest and Doctor of the Church 16th Week in Ordinary Time
Gospel: Mt 13: 1 - 9
That same day Jesus went out of the house and sat beside the sea. Such great crowds gathered around him that he got into a boat and sat there, while the whole crowd stood on the beach. And he told them many things in parables, saying: “Listen! A sower went out to sow. And as he sowed, some seeds fell on the path, and the birds came and ate them up. Other seeds fell on rocky ground, where they did not have much soil, and they sprang up quickly, since they had no depth of soil. But when the sun rose, they were scorched; and since they had no root, they withered away. Other seeds fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked them. Other seeds fell on good soil and brought forth grain, some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty. Let anyone with ears listen!”
Reflection
If the seed is the Word of God, as the evangelist will clarify later, then it means that God speaks to anyone and everyone in their different states of preparedness or unpreparedness, eagerness or reluctance to listen. No one is deprived of God’s Word, for the farmer who sows does not ration the seed but scatters it liberally in all directions. Despite the inhospitable state of the soil of the human heart, contact with God’s Word will not leave it unmoved. For God’s Word, according to the prophet Isaiah, does not return to its sender without achieving its purpose (cf. 55:10-11). We continue to witness dramatic conversions today, because the Word of God dialogues unceasingly with atheists, agnostics, hardened sinners and those who have hopelessly given up on themselves; just as it does with believers and saints and mystics
Prayer
Lord Jesus, you are the Word with which God continues to dialogue with the world. Increase our faith in the transforming power of that divinehuman dialogue. Amen.
