GOSPEL POWER | JUNE 18, 2021 | FRIDAY | 11th Week in Ordinary Time
Gospel: Mt 6: 19 - 23
Jesus said to his disciples, “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust consume and where thieves break in and steal; but store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consumes and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. “The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light; but if your eye is unhealthy, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness!”
Reflection
We can store up treasures in heaven by emptying ourselves of what we have stored on earth. This “emptying” does NOT mean “throwing away” nor “using wastefully,” but “sharing” with the needy. It is emptying oneself for the sake of filling up others. Everything we have on earth has been given us as a trust. Everything is a blessing, even the fruit of our toil. No blessing is to be hoarded for one’s sole benefit. God’s blessings are NOT meant to be enjoyed only by a few but are supposed to abound for all. When we take this matter to heart and act on it by reaching out to the less privileged, then we store up treasures in heaven, where, alone, our hearts will find true and perfect rest in the bosom of God, to whom all treasures belong
Prayer
Lord Jesus, deliver us from greed and selfishness that can dispossess us of heavenly treasures that endure forever. Amen
