GOSPEL POWER | JUNE 21, 2021 | MONDAY | ST. ALOYSIUS GONZAGA | 12th Week in Ordinary Time
Gospel: Mt 7: 1 - 15
Jesus said to his disciples, “Do not judge, so that you may not be judged. For with the judgment you make you will be judged, and the measure you give will be the measure you get. Why do you see the speck in your neighbor’s eye, but do not notice the log in your own eye? Or how can you say to your neighbor, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ while the log is in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your neighbor’s eye.”
Reflection
“You reap what you sow.” This agricultural wisdom is also validated in our relationships with one another. The kind of energy that we project onto others will bounce back to us, as it resonates with their own energy. A familiar proverb says: “Love begets love.” And Martin Luther King, spoke of its opposite: “Hate begets hate.” Only a conscious choice to love amidst hatred can counter hateful energies. Only a conscious refusal to judge another can arrest the pretense to reciprocally pronounce a “guilty” verdict on one another. No person has a complete knowledge of another. Thus, any judgment we pass will be partial and unjust. Judging is God’s prerogative, and we usurp it every time we presume to judge a fellow human being
Prayer
Lord Jesus, help us to honestly admit our imperfect knowledge of one another and to make that the basis for withholding judgment on anyone. Amen
