 Gospel: Mt 8: 1 – 4

When Jesus had come down from the mountain, great crowds followed him; and there was a leper who came to him and knelt before him, saying, “Lord, if you choose, you can make me clean.” He stretched out his hand and touched him, saying, “I do choose. Be made clean!” Immediately his leprosy was cleansed. Then Jesus said to him, “See that you say nothing to anyone; but go, show yourself to the priest, and offer the gift that Moses commanded, as a testimony to them.”

Reflection

In the Jewish society that was so concerned with maintaining  and protecting the boundary between what is clean and  unclean, leprosy was a most dreaded disease that forced  a person to live in isolation outside of the community to prevent  contamination (cf. Lv 13:45). Lepers, however, were permitted to  beg at the city gate (cf. 2 Kgs 7:3-9), and this must be where Jesus  encounters the leper in today’s Gospel. The man simply asks Jesus  to make a wish for his cleansing, but Jesus unexpectedly crosses the  well-guarded boundary between clean and unclean and touches the  untouchable. By doing that, he does not only heal the man physically,  but also psycho-emotionally by drawing him out of the dreary  isolation into which he is forced to live because of social pressure.

Prayer

Lord, you have crossed the boundary between heaven and earth to be  with us. Increase our faith that there is no boundary you will not cross to  bring us back to our rightful place in the Father’s kingdom. Amen.
