GOSPEL POWER |JUNE 7, 2021 | MONDAY | 10th Week in Ordinary Time
Gospel: Mt 5: 1 - 12
When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain; and after he sat down, his disciples came to him. Then he began to speak, and taught them, saying: “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.”
Reflection
The Beatitudes, with their unexpected declaration of what constitutes true happiness, are meant to free us from the mental conditioning by the world. They unmask the world’s deceitful propaganda of what can satisfy the human heart. Only the One who fashioned the human heart knows that. In the Beatitudes, Jesus offers us the vision of the Divine Maker. God’s thoughts are not our thoughts, nor are God’s ways our ways. But when we open our lives to the vision offered by the Beatitudes, then our thoughts and ways are aligned with God’s. The values and mindset of the world are powerless to shape our character, for we do not belong to the world. We are free citizens of the Kingdom of God, who think and act like our heavenly Father
Prayer
Lord Jesus, let the powerful vision of the Beatitudes gradually transform our way of being in the world. Amen
