GOSPEL POWER l APRIL 1, 2022 - FRIDAY
4th Week of Lent
Gospel: Jn 7:1-2, 10, 25-30
1 Jesus went about in Galilee. He did not wish to go about in Judea because the Jews were looking for an opportunity to kill him. 2 Now the Jewish festival of Booths was near. . . . 10But after his brothers had gone to the festival, then he also went, not publicly but as it were in secret. . . . 25Now some of the people of Jerusalem were saying, “Is not this the man whom they are trying to kill? 26And here he is, speaking openly, but they say nothing to him! Can it be that the authorities really know that this is the Messiah? 27Yet we know where this man is from; but when the Messiah comes, no one will know where he is from.” 28Then Jesus cried out as he was teaching in the temple, “You know me, and you know where I am from. I have not come on my own. But the one who sent me is true, and you do not know him. 29I know him, because I am from him, and he sent me.” 30Then they tried to arrest him, but no one laid hands on him, because his hour had not yet come.
The course of events is being guided toward the fulfillment of divine purposes. Even if Jesus exposes himself to danger by going up to the hostile city of Jerusalem, no one can harm him before his hour. The hour of Jesus is the climax of his ministry. Paradoxically, this moment of mutual glorification of the Father and his Son is the lifting up of Jesus on the cross. It will be the ultimate display of God’s love… the sacrifice that saves. No one can hasten the arrival of this hour, nor prevent it. Jesus is not a helpless victim who is at the mercy of circumstances. He is the perfectly free human being who enters into his destiny in obedience and love.
Lord Jesus, help us to learn and appreciate the value of obedience in bringing to fulfillment the divine purposes. Amen.
