GOSPEL POWER l APRIL 4, 2022 - MONDAY
5th week of Lent
Saint Vincent Ferrer, priest
Gospel: Jn 8:12-20
12Again Jesus spoke to the people, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life.” 13Then the Pharisees said to him, “You are testifying on your own behalf; your testimony is not valid.” 14Jesus answered, “Even if I testify on my own behalf, my testimony is valid because I know where I have come from and where I am going, but you do not know where I come from or where I am going. 15You judge by human standards; I judge no one. 16Yet even if I do judge, my judgment is valid; for it is not I alone who judge, but I and the Father who sent me. 17In your law it is written that the testimony of two witnesses is valid. 18I testify on my own behalf, and the Father who sent me testifies on my behalf.” 19Then they said to him, “Where is your Father?” Jesus answered, “You know neither me nor my Father. If you knew me, you would know my Father also.” 20He spoke these words while he was teaching in the treasury of the temple, but no one arrested him, because his hour had not yet come.
One of the fundamental assertions of the author of the First Letter of John is that “God is light, and in him there is no darkness at all” (cf. 1Jn 1:5). Therefore, when Jesus declares that he is the “light of the world,” he is making a claim to divinity. God does not need anyone to bear witness to his claims, for God is not only truthful but the Truth-in-person. This is what Jesus is trying to tell the Pharisees who are questioning the validity of his claim. The presence of the light cannot be denied when it shines forth and illumines all those around. And this is precisely what Jesus is doing when he teaches and performs signs. He brings the light from above, which is his place of origin, to those who are in darkness below. Those who are so accustomed to darkness and are comfortable to live in concealment are dazzled and blinded by light. But those who follow the light, even their very lives become luminous. For where there is light, darkness dissolves.
Lord Jesus, fill us with your light, that we may live transparent lives that enable others to glimpse the radiance of the Kingdom already present in our midst. Amen. apri
