GOSPEL POWER l APRIL 5, 2022 - TUESDAY
5th Week of Lent
Saint Vincent Ferrer, priest
Gospel: Jn 8:21-30
21Again Jesus said to the people, “I am going away, and you will search for me, but you will die in your sin. Where I am going, you cannot come.” 22Then the Jews said, “Is he going to kill himself? Is that what he means by saying, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come’?” 23He said to them, “You are from below, I am from above; you are of this world, I am not of this world. 24I told you that you would die in your sins, for you will die in your sins unless you believe that I am he.” 25They said to him, “Who are you?” Jesus said to them, “Why do I speak to you at all? 26I have much to say about you and much to condemn; but the one who sent me is true, and I declare to the world what I have heard from him.” 27They did not understand that he was speaking to them about the Father. 28So Jesus said, “When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will realize that I am he, and that I do nothing on my own, but I speak these things as the Father instructed me. 29And the one who sent me is with me; he has not left me alone, for I always do what is pleasing to him.” 30As he was saying these things, many believed in him.
Jesus belongs to God’s sphere above. But God so loves the world he has created below, that he sends his Son to bridge the two spheres and empower human beings to cross over to what is above. Jesus is the only entry point to God’s sphere, and faith in him is the sole key that will permit access. Thus, for the Gospel of John, refusal to believe in Jesus is the meaning of sin and the cause of eternal death. The Jews in today’s Gospel reject Jesus as the revealer of truth, thus their minds and hearts remain shut. In the face of such stubborn resistance, Jesus looks to his being lifted up on the cross as the moment he is revealed as I AM – the name by which God identifies himself to Moses as Israel’s redeemer from slavery (cf. Ex 3:14).
Lord Jesus, may every circumstance of life be an opportunity for us to grow in our faith in you. Amen.
