GOSPEL POWER l AUGUST 14, 2021
19th Week in Ordinary Time
Gospel: Mt 19:13-15
13Little children were being brought to Jesus in order that he might lay his hands on them and pray. The disciples spoke sternly to those who brought them; 14but Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of heaven belongs.” 15And he laid his hands on them and went on his way.
The disciples’ dismissive attitude toward the children manifests a worldly mindset that places importance only on those who are active contributors to the economy of the land. That mindset belittles children because they are economically passive. Jesus turns that worldly logic upside down. No one is to be deemed unimportant in the Kingdom of heaven. Everyone matters in God’s sight, and those treated least in the world are the greatest in the Kingdom of heaven. Lord Jesus, help us to see and relate with every reality on earth from the perspective of the heavenly Kingdom, where no one is despised because of littleness. Amen
