GOSPEL POWER l JUNE 1, 2022 - WEDNESDAY of 7th Week of Easter
Saint Justin, martyr
Gospel: Jn 17:11b-19
Looking up to heaven, Jesus prayed, 11…“Holy Father, protect them in your name that you have given me, so that they may be one, as we are one. 12While I was with them, I protected them in your name that you have given me. I guarded them, and not one of them was lost except the one destined to be lost, so that the scripture might be fulfilled. 13But now I am coming to you, and I speak these things in the world so that they may have my joy made complete in themselves. 14I have given them your word, and the world has hated them because they do not belong to the world, just as I do not belong to the world. 15I am not asking you to take them out of the world, but I ask you to protect them from the evil one. 16They do not belong to the world, just as I do not belong to the world. 17Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth. 18As you have sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world. 19And for their sakes I sanctify myself, so that they also may be sanctified in truth.”
Jesus utters this prayer in the hearing of his disciples, so that they will feel how precious they are to him. This reassurance is necessary in the context of his impending departure. As the security they experience in his presence and company is taken away from them, they can have the confidence of being powerfully protected by Jesus’ appeal, which the Father can never turn down nor ignore. They are covered by the protective mantle of Jesus’ efficacious prayer. And not only they, but believers everywhere and in every generation can rest in the confidence of being encompassed in Jesus’ prayerful appeal to the Father. We will be kept from the evil one and his malicious influence. And while we remain in the world, it cannot make its claims on us, for we do not belong to it.
Lord Jesus, increase our faith and help us to trust in your powerful prayer, especially in moments when we are tempted to succumb to the world’s lures. Amen.
