GOSPEL POWER l JUNE 10, 2022 - FRIDAY of 10th Week in Ordinary Time
Gospel: Mt 5:27-32
Jesus said to his disciples, 27”You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ 28But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart. 29If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away; it is better for you to lose one of your members than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. 30And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away; it is better for you to lose one of your members than for your whole body to go into hell. 31It was also said, ‘Whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a certificate of divorce.’ 32But I say to you that anyone who divorces his wife, except on the ground of unchastity, causes her to commit adultery; and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.”
Purity of the heart begins with guarding the senses. Lustful fantasies are created out of the materials fed to the senses. The senses are the gateways, as it were, where everything that seeks entry into our inmost sanctuary must be carefully screened. The seemingly violent image of cutting off and tearing out body-parts really signifies rooting out habits and avoiding people and places that lead to sin. It may feel like depriving oneself of something necessary and indispensable but in reality, it offers radical freedom from corruption, the freedom to relate with everyone in integrity and purity of heart.
Lord Jesus, bring down our pride that can prevent us from taking the initiative to neutralize our anger by making the first move to be reconciled. Amen.
