GOSPEL POWER l JUNE 3, 2022 - FRIDAY of 7th Week of Easter
Saint Charles Lwanga and Companions, martyrs
Gospel: Jn 21:15-19
15When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my lambs.” 16A second time he said to him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Tend my sheep.” 17He said to him the third time, “Simon son of John, do you love me?” Peter felt hurt because he said to him the third time, “Do you love me?” And he said to him, “Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my sheep. 18Very truly, I tell you, when you were younger, you used to fasten your own belt and to go wherever you wished. But when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will fasten a belt around you and take you where you do not wish to go.” 19(He said this to indicate the kind of death by which he would glorify God.) After this he said to him, “Follow me.”
Failure is a great teacher. The dramatic change in Peter’s personality in this episode reflects the sobering lesson that failure has taught him. Gone is the presumptuous apostle who boldly declared that he would follow his Lord to the point of laying down his life. After the threefold denial, he knows better. Jesus completes the formative work that the experience of failure has begun in Peter. In this intimate encounter, he heals Peter of shame and guilt by gently drawing from him a threefold confession of love that reverses the denial. Peter no longer trusts his own self-conception, but humbly submits to Jesus who knows his heart through and through. In response, Jesus renews his trust by reconfirming Peter’s leadership. Now, Peter is ready for the mission, because authentic mission can have no other foundation except love.
Lord Jesus, may failure be for us, too, a learning experience that will mold us into the persons God wants us to be. Amen.
