GOSPEL POWER l MAY 19, 2022 - THURSDAY
5th Week of Easter
Gospel: Jn 15:9-11
Jesus said to his disciples, 9 “As the Father has loved me, so I have loved you; abide in my love. 10If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love. 11I have said these things to you so that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be complete.”
In the eyes of the world, being willful and assertive and able to command others is a sign of strength, while submission and obedience is a sign of weakness. It is not so in the logic of God. St. Paul discovered that, in the weakness of surrender and submission to God’s disposition, the divine power reaches perfection (2 Cor 12:9). We find here the reason why being obedient brings joy. What greater joy can there be than experiencing the power of God attain its perfection in our lives, because we keep the commandments and thus abide in the love of Christ? He obeyed his Father perfectly so that the Father’s power was fully manifested in him and caused him to rejoice.
Lord Jesus, help us to discover the joy that flows from obeying your commandments. Amen.
