GOSPEL POWER l MAY 24, 2022 - TUESDAY of 6th Week of Easter

Gospel: Jn 16:5-11 

 Jesus said to his disciples, 5 “But now I am going to him who sent me;  yet none of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ 6 But because I have  said these things to you, sorrow has filled your hearts. 7 Nevertheless  I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do  not go away, the Advocate will not come to you; but if I go, I will  send him to you. 8 And when he comes, he will prove the world wrong  about sin and righteousness and judgment: 9 about sin, because they  do not believe in me; 10about righteousness, because I am going to the  Father and you will see me no longer; 11about judgment, because the  ruler of this world has been condemned.” 

Jesus speaks of the role of the Holy Spirit not only as  defender, but also as prosecutor in a law-court, as it were.  Jesus foresees how the Spirit will turn upside down the  verdict that will be pronounced on him during the paschal events.  Jesus will be sentenced to death as a sinner, but the Spirit will prove  that the real sinners are those who, having heard the revelation of  Jesus, refuse to believe. Pilate will hand Jesus over for crucifixion, not  because he finds Jesus unrighteous, but because he fears falling out  of favor with Caesar. The ruler of this world (Satan) will orchestrate  the condemnation of Jesus, but the Spirit will reveal the divine logic of  reversal that will cause the evil scheme to backfire, so that this world’s  ruler will be cast out instead, exorcised by the very crucifixion that he  will have cleverly masterminded. Jesus assures believers of a similar  intervention by the Holy Spirit when they are in trouble for their  faith in him.
