GOSPEL POWER l MAY 3, 2022
Saints Philip and James, Apostles
Gospel: Jn 14:6-14
6 Jesus said to Thomas, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7 If you know me, you will know my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him.” 8 Philip said to him, “Lord, show us the Father, and we will be satisfied.” 9 Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you all this time, Philip, and you still do not know me? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own; but the Father who dwells in me does his works. 11Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; but if you do not, then believe me because of the works themselves. 12Very truly, I tell you, the one who believes in me will also do the works that I do and, in fact, will do greater works than these, because I am going to the Father. 13I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14If in my name you ask me for anything, I will do it.”
Perfect unity is outside the scope of the human experience in this imperfect world where we dwell. That is why Philip struggles to understand the oneness of Jesus with the Father. As he expresses the desire to see the Father, Philip represents all of us in our common yearning for an authentic spiritual experience, our pining for a home where our restless hearts can find rest. Thanks to this dialogue between Jesus and Philip, we know that God has already responded to our yearning. In Jesus, God has come within our reach. Although, like Philip, our minds cannot grasp what perfect unity is like, our faith makes up for that inability. And more than that, faith draws us to the heart of that perfect unity of Father and Son and enables us to recognize it as our final home.
Lord Jesus, in you and through you, we see, hear, and touch the Father, and get a foretaste of our final homecoming. Amen.
