GOSPEL POWER l MAY 4, 2022
3rd Week of Easter
Gospel: Jn 6:35-40
35Jesus said to the crowd, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. 36But I said to you that you have seen me and yet do not believe. 37Everything that the Father gives me will come to me, and anyone who comes to me I will never drive away; 38for I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will, but the will of him who sent me. 39And this is the will of him who sent me, that I should lose nothing of all that he has given me, but raise it up on the last day. 40This is indeed the will of my Father, that all who see the Son and believe in him may have eternal life; and I will raise them up on the last day.”
Today’s Gospel makes it clear that physical sight does not give a person any advantage over others who have not been blessed with it. For in matters of faith, only the vision of the heart counts. The Jewish crowds saw Jesus and experienced firsthand his mighty deeds, and yet they did not believe. Later generations, including ours, have only the faith-testimonies of the first believers, but those were sufficient to open the vision of our hearts, for the Holy Spirit works powerfully in our midst. We can say with St. Paul that, “We live by faith, not by sight.” For though St. Paul had a mystical experience of Christ, he too, like us, never saw the historical Jesus of Nazareth.
Lord Jesus, thank you for infusing in us a profound faith-conviction that your presence, which is beyond sense experience, pervades the world, reclaiming it for God. Amen.
