GOSPEL POWER l MAY 6, 2022 - FRIDAY
3rd Week of Easter
Gospel: Jn 6:52-59
52The Jews then disputed among themselves, saying, “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?” 53So Jesus said to them, “Very truly, I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. 54Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood have eternal life, and I will raise them up on the last day; 55for my flesh is true food and my blood is true drink. 56Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood abide in me, and I in them. 57Just as the living Father sent me, and I live because of the Father, so whoever eats me will live because of me. 58This is the bread that came down from heaven, not like that which your ancestors ate, and they died. But the one who eats this bread will live forever.” 59He said these things while he was teaching in the synagogue at Capernaum.
When the Son of God assumed our lowly nature, he also embraced the poverty of human language and subjected himself to its limitations. Thus, in this long speech about the “bread of life,” he labors to communicate the greatest gift that he comes, not only to reveal, but also to deliver to us — the life that he shares with his Father from all eternity. Speaking of a reality from above using words from below runs the risk of misunderstanding, but love dares to take that risk. No one is really capable of grasping what belongs to another dimension and is beyond sense-experience. What Jesus asks of us is to trust the revealer and the revelation, for only with faith will the language barrier be surmounted. His invitation to eat his flesh is actually a symbolic expression which means to put our faith in him. Lord Jesus, grant that our hearts may trust what our minds cannot grasp. Ignite our Faith! Amen.
