GOSPEL POWER l OCTOBER 11, 2021 l MONDAY
28th Week in Ordinary Time
Gospel: Lk 11:29-32
29When the crowds were increasing, Jesus began to say, “This generation is an evil generation; it asks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah. 30For just as Jonah became a sign to the people of Nineveh, so the Son of Man will be to this generation. 31The queen of the South will rise at the judgment with the people of this generation and condemn them, because she came from the ends of the earth to listen to the wisdom of Solomon, and see, something greater than Solomon is here! 32The people of Nineveh will rise up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, because they repented at the proclamation of Jonah, and see, something greater than Jonah is here!”
The constant demand for confirmatory signs is a manifestation of disbelief and mistrust. Jesus says that this tendency among his generation is evil, because it implies the rejection of the multiple signs he has already been performing in his ministry — healing, exorcism, etc. Foreigners, like the queen of the south and the Ninevites have shown greater openness to God’s action in their history. Jesus is not just a wise man, like Solomon, but Wisdom-incarnate; he is not just a prophet preaching repentance, like Jonah, but the very embodiment of God’s offer of salvation to all. Though the sign-seeking of the Jews is evil, Jesus still offers them the sign of Jonah, whose story ended positively with the conversion of the Ninevites. Hope is the last word of this episode.
Lord Jesus, may we not seek certainty by asking for signs, but turn to your Holy Spirit, who is the sole and trustworthy guarantor of the fulfillment of God’s promises. Amen.
