GOSPEL POWER l OCTOBER 12, 2021 l TUESDAY
28th Week in Ordinary Time
Gospel: Lk 11:37-41
37While Jesus was speaking, a Pharisee invited him to dine with him; so he went in and took his place at the table. 38The Pharisee was amazed to see that he did not first wash before dinner. 39Then the Lord said to him, “Now you Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and of the dish, but inside you are full of greed and wickedness. 40You fools! Did not the one who made the outside make the inside also? 41So give for alms those things that are within; and see, everything will be clean for you.”
The patience of Jesus is severely tried by those who, because of their leadership role, wish to impose their disoriented beliefs on others. The exaggerated ceremonial washing practiced and promoted by the Pharisees shifts the concern for purity from the heart to the exterior. For it is easy to hide a corrupt interior under a carefully sanitized façade. Human eyes are normally unable to pierce through an impressive exterior. But God’s eyes cannot be deceived. Despite the strong, denunciatory tone of Jesus’ speech, it really, ultimately aims to bring about a reform-ofbehavior among those acknowledged as religious teachers of Israel.
Lord Jesus, may we be more concerned with what God sees than with what other people see. Amen.
