GOSPEL POWER l OCTOBER 9, 2021 l SATURDAY
27th Week in Ordinary Time
Gospel: Lk 11:27-28
27While Jesus was speaking, a woman in the crowd raised her voice and said to him, “Blessed is the womb that bore you and the breasts that nursed you!” 28But he said, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it!”
Out of admiration for Jesus, the unnamed woman wants to compliment his mother by calling her “blessed.” But Jesus shifts the focus of the woman’s perception of Mary’s blessedness — from the purely biological generation and nurturance of an excellent offspring, to her spiritual sensitivity to the action of God in her life. Mary’s divine maternity is her unique vocation which will never be repeated in the life of any believer, for the Word has become flesh through only one woman. Mary is the one and only theotokos (God-bearer). But in her attentiveness and complete submission to God’s word (“Let it be done unto me according to your word.” — Lk 1:38) she becomes the model of a universal blessedness accessible to all believers. This is the blessedness we must aspire after and pray for.
Lord Jesus, form in us a listening and docile heart, like your mother’s, ready to act at God’s bidding. Amen.
