GOSPEL POWER l SEPTEMBER 23, 2021 l THURSDAY
25th Week in Ordinary Time
Gospel: Lk 9:7-9 7
Herod the ruler heard about all that had taken place, and he was perplexed, because it was said by some that John had been raised from the dead, 8 by some that Elijah had appeared, and by others that one of the ancient prophets had arisen. 9 Herod said, “John I beheaded; but who is this about whom I hear such things?” And he tried to see him.
Herod was interested to see Jesus because he was curious about the wondrous things he had been hearing about him. Most certainly, the news had to do with the miracles, exorcisms and powerful preaching of Jesus. Herod’s attempts to see Jesus would not be realized until Jesus was about to be put to death. Pilate sent Jesus to Herod as a captive, bound and helpless. Not seeing any of the marvels he expected to see, Herod sent Jesus back unimpressed and disillusioned. Unknown to Herod, it was at this moment, when Jesus appeared weak and helpless, that he would accomplish the most powerful deed in history — to bring salvation to the world. Without faith, seeing remains superficial.
Lord Jesus, help us to see everything with the eyes of faith. Amen.
