GOSPEL POWER l SEPTEMBER 25, 2021 l SATURDAY
25th Week in Ordinary Time
Gospel: Lk 9:43b-45
43...While everyone was amazed at all that Jesus was doing, he said to his disciples, 44“Let these words sink into your ears: The Son of Man is going to be betrayed into human hands.” 45But they did not understand this saying; its meaning was concealed from them, so that they could not perceive it. And they were afraid to ask him about this saying.
Three times Jesus reveals to his disciples the violent fate that awaits him in Jerusalem (Lk 9:22, 44 and 18:31-33). Today’s Gospel is the second occasion of this revelation. But in all three occasions, his words fell on deaf ears and uncomprehending hearts. For the Jews, Messiah and cross are utterly irreconcilable. A passage in Deuteronomy may account for this: “Anyone hung on a tree is under God’s curse” (21:23). This curse is also applied to those executed by crucifixion. How can a cursed man be considered as God’s anointed? For this reason, St. Paul will later say that Christ crucified is a stumbling block to Jews (1 Cor 1:23). But Messiah and cross are the two half-truths that complete each other and must be joined together to see the whole truth about Jesus’ identity. The way of the cross is his road to messianic glory and the fulfillment of God’s plan.
Lord Jesus, help us to hear the message of the cross as a resounding cry of victory. Amen.
