GOSPEL POWER l SEPTEMBER 29, 2021 l WEDNESDAY
Saints Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael, Archangels
Gospel: Jn 1:47-51
47When Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him, he said of him, “Here is truly an Israelite in whom there is no deceit!” 48Nathanael asked him, “Where did you get to know me?” Jesus answered, “I saw you under the fig tree before Philip called you.” 49Nathanael replied, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!” 50Jesus answered, “Do you believe because I told you that I saw you under the fig tree? You will see greater things than these.” 51And he said to him, “Very truly, I tell you, you will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man.”
Jesus is described in the Gospel of John as “the One who comes from above” (cf. 8:23). He belongs to the heavenly realm, yet he empties himself of the glory proper to his divinity (cf. Phil 2:6-8) by embracing our nature, becoming one of us. Jesus becomes the bridge, as it were, that connects earth to heaven, our only way to God. But at the same time, as today’s Gospel attests, Jesus is the stairway through which heavenly beings — God’s messengers (angeloi in Greek) — descend on earth and ascend back to heaven, thereby maintaining an unbroken communication between the two realms. Through these heavenly messengers, God shows us his care, but through his Son, God gives us his very self.
Lord Jesus, help us to be more sensitive to the presence and discreet guidance of the heavenly beings sent to accompany us back to our heavenly homeland. Amen.
