GOSPEL POWER l SEPTEMBER 5, 2021 l SUNDAY
23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time
Gospel: Mk 7:31-37
31Jesus returned from the region of Tyre, and went by way of Sidon towards the Sea of Galilee, in the region of the Decapolis. 32They brought to him a deaf man who had an impediment in his speech; and they begged him to lay his hand on him. 33He took him aside in private, away from the crowd, and put his fingers into his ears, and he spat and touched his tongue. 34Then looking up to heaven, he sighed and said to him, “Ephphatha,” that is, “Be opened.” 35And immediately his ears were opened, his tongue was released, and he spoke plainly. 36Then Jesus ordered them to tell no one; but the more he ordered them, the more zealously they proclaimed it. 37They were astounded beyond measure, saying, “He has done everything well; he even makes the deaf to hear and the mute to speak.”
We are interconnected in every way — each human being to another and to the rest of creation, and earth to heaven. Today’s Gospel beautifully exhibits this interconnection. The inhabitants of the district of Decapolis are not indifferent to the plight of their deaf-mute neighbor. They show sincere concern by leading the man to Jesus, interceding for his healing. Jesus does not perform the healing by himself, but invokes his unbroken communion with his heavenly Father, raising his eyes in supplication. Wonders happen when we become aware of our interconnection. Heaven stoops down on earth and blesses it. God’s promise through the prophet Isaiah (cf. first reading) becomes a reality. And there is hope that we can overcome the partiality, against which James warns us in the second reading. Lord Jesus, sharpen our awareness of being interconnected and let that awareness influence our decisions and actions. Amen.
