GOSPEL POWER |MAY 10, 2021 MONDAY | Saint Damien de Veuster of Molokai, priest
6th Week of Easter
Gospel: Jn 15: 26 – 16: 4a
Jesus said to his disciples, “When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who comes from the Father, he will testify on my behalf. You also are to testify because you have been with me from the beginning. “I have said these things to you to keep you from stumbling. They will put you out of the synagogues. Indeed, an hour is coming
when those who kill you will think that by doing so they are offering worship to God. And they will do this because they have not known the Father or me. But I have said these things to you so that when their hour comes you may remember that I told you about them.”
REFLECTION
Those who are not in touch with Jesus’ revelation of God as LOVE can fall into the error of believing that destroying other people’s lives or inflicting suffering on them is a way of serving and honoring God, an act pleasing to God. From the birth of Christianity until today, this error has given rise to the persecution of those who bear Jesus’ name. Though the Advocate that Jesus promises to send is the Spirit of Truth, he does not undo the error of religious persecution by simply sparing the believers from such evil situations. Rather, persecutions become the very context for testifying to the Truth. Empowered by the Spirit, believers courageously uphold the Truth even to the point of self-sacrifice. The Truth is not extinguished, but becomes more resplendent as martyrs willingly offer their lives for it.
PRAYER
Lord Jesus, your Church is strengthened by the testimony of martyrs throughout the ages. Let your Spirit-Advocate embolden us too, to testify to the Truth. Amen.
