GOSPEL POWER |MAY 17, 2021 MONDAY | 7th Week of Easter|
Gospel: Jn 16: 29 – 33
The disciples of Jesus said, “Yes, now you are speaking plainly, not in any figure of speech! Now we know that you know all things, and do not need to have anyone question you; by this we believe that you came from God.” Jesus answered them, “Do you now believe? The hour is coming, indeed it has come, when you will be scattered, each one to his home, and you will leave me alone. Yet I am not alone because the Father is with me. I have said this to you, so that in me you may have peace. In the world you face persecution. But take courage; I have conquered the world!”
REFLECTION
Jesus knows that his disciples’ declaration of faith and understanding is mere presumption. The true test of their faith is yet to come and will result in failure, as they scatter like sheep abandoning the Good Shepherd. Jesus hastens to reassure them that this crisis will not disturb the peace they have in him. This peace is about to be sealed by his victory over the forces that oppose God. Though these hostile forces will continue to assert themselves after Jesus’ triumph, thus causing the believers in every generation to suffer, they can never snatch away the peace that Jesus will have won for his flock through the laying down of his life.
PRAYER
Lord Jesus, thank you for the gift of peace that cushions the impact of the troubles that assail us in this world and enables us to journey in serenity. Amen.
