GOSPEL POWER - NOVEMBER 17, 2020 TUESDAY - 33rd Week in Ordinary Time

Gospel: Lk 19:1-10 1

Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through it.  A man was there named Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax collector and was rich.  He was trying to see who Jesus was, but on account of the crowd he could not, because he was short in stature.  So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore tree to see him, because he was going to pass that way.  When Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, hurry and come down; for I must stay at your house today.”  So he hurried down and was happy to welcome him.  All who saw it began to grumble and said, “He has gone to be the guest of one who is a sinner.”  Zacchaeus stood there and said to the Lord, “Look, half of my possessions, Lord, I will give to the poor; and if I have defrauded anyone of anything, I will pay back four times as much.”  Then Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because he too is a son of Abraham. For the Son of Man came to seek out and to save the lost.”

Reflection:

No one who desires to see Jesus will be denied the opportunity to encounter him. For Jesus is the real initiator of the encounter, the One who awakens that desire in a person’s heart, the first to come in search of the seeker. But the quality of a person’s response to that desire matters, as the story of Zacchaeus demonstrates. Prevented by his small stature and perhaps by the hostility of the crowd from catching a glimpse of Jesus, Zacchaeus surmounts these obstacles by being resourceful. He does not mind appearing ridiculous as he hangs on a branch of a tree, as long as he can fulfill his desire. But that desire is no mere curiosity about the appearance of Jesus. The Gospel text says, “he was seeking to see WHO Jesus was.” Jesus responds to that deep longing by revealing to Zacchaeus that he is truly what his Hebrew name means—Yeshua—salvation.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, help us to sort out the competing desires in our hearts and to prioritize always the desire to meet you. Amen.
