GOSPEL POWER - NOVEMBER 25, 2020 - 34TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME
Gospel: Lk 21:12-19
Jesus said to the crowd, “They will arrest you and persecute you; they will hand you over to synagogues and prisons, and you will be brought before kings and governors because of my name. This will give you an opportunity to testify. So make up your minds not to prepare your defense in advance; for I will give you words and a wisdom that none of your opponents will be able to withstand or contradict. You will be betrayed even by parents and brothers, by relatives and friends; and they will put some of you to death. You will be hated by all because of my name. But not a hair of your head will perish. By your endurance you will gain your souls.” T he truth of what Jesus says in today’s Gospel cannot be confined to a particular era, whether past or future. There has never been a shortage of martyrs in the Church throughout the centuries. This fact allows us to glimpse the ongoing work of divine transformation in the world. This apocalyptic Gospel scenario rings true especially in our time marked by religious fundamentalism, intolerance and the shedding of blood. Jesus continues to be a sign of contradiction in the person of those who confess him as “Lord” and bear his name. His destiny—the Paschal Mystery—is fulfilled in them too, enabling them to participate in the labor pains that will generate the new creation. Divine reversal is at work, drawing new life out of the sacrifice of martyrs.
Lord Jesus, in this time that religion is used to sow terror, may we never forget your words—that anyone who loses one’s life for your sake and for the Gospel will save it. Amen.
