GOSPEL POWER - NOVEMBER 27, 2020

Gospel: Lk 21:29-33

Jesus told his disciples a parable: “Look at the fig tree and all the trees; as soon as they sprout leaves you can see for yourselves and know that summer is already near. So also, when you see these things taking place, you know that the kingdom of God is near. Truly I tell you, this generation will not pass away until all things have taken place. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.”

REFLECTION

In Lk 17:21, Jesus says, “The coming of the Kingdom of God cannot be observed… for the Kingdom of God is among you.” In today’s Gospel, he implies that natural and man-made calamities—plagues, wars, earthquakes, famines—are signs of the Kingdom’s nearness. But these disasters occur in every age and are, by now, a common human experience. That must be Jesus’ reason for comparing them to the cyclic budding of the fig and other trees, and why he says that, “this generation will not pass away until all these things have taken place.” How do these calamities become signs of the Kingdom’s nearness? These crisis-events reveal the true characters of people. The Kingdom, whose domain is the human heart, shows forth in the way people respond to the necessities of those times. Those disasters are dreadful, but they offer us opportunities to let the Kingdom shine forth in our midst.

PRAYER

Lord Jesus, keep our eyes open to the signs of the Kingdom’s nearness and never let us miss the opportunily to participate in manifesting its presence among us. Amen.
