Knowledge
The Birth Of Issac The Promised Son (VS. 1-7)
⁃ God kept His promise and gave Abraham his son named Issac just as He promised through Sarah (VS. 1-3)
⁃ Abraham takes and continues to obey God by circumcising Issac (VS. 4-5)
⁃ Sarah admits to laughing at God for promising her a son and declares that the world can laugh now as worship and rejoicing over God being big enough and right enough to keep His promises (VS. 6-7)
The Feast Of Celebration For Issac (VS. 8-16)
⁃ Abraham through a big feast to celebrate Issac birth (VS. 8)
⁃ Ishmael mocks little Issac and Sarah sees this act as disrespectful and throws out Hagar and Ishmael (VS. 9-10)
⁃ It was grievous to Abraham to have to throw them out but God tells him not to be grievous because his seed will come out of Isaac and not Ishmael (VS. 11-13)
⁃ Abraham sends off Ishmael and Hagar, after some time there supplies ran out and Hagar throws Ishmael under a tree (VS. 14-15)
⁃ She walks away so she won’t have to see her son die and God appears to her (VS. 16)
God Speaks To Hagar (VS. 17-19)
⁃ God promises to make a great nation of Ishmael again (VS. 17-18)
⁃ Hagar then sees a well of water (probably not miraculously but one she had not noticed before) (VS. 19)
The Future Of Ishmael (VS. 20-24)
-He became a great archer (vs. 20)
⁃ Lives in Paran (the wilderness desert of Sinai) (vs. 20-21)
-Took a wife of Egypt given by his mother and later his daughters will marry Esau (vs. 21)
Abraham In The Land Of The Philistines
-The King and his captain come to speak to Abraham because they know that God is real and with Abraham (vs. 22-24)
-Abraham reproves the king over a well that was violently taken from him (vs. 25)
-Ablimelech says he knew nothing about it(vs. 26)
-Abraham makes a covenant to get the well back (vs. 27-32)
-Abraham returns to the land of the Philistines plants a grove and calls on the name of the Lord (vs. 33-34)
Understanding
We see that God kept His promise to Abraham to give him a son (vs. 1-3)
We see the big mess that not trusting God and having Ishmael is gonna cause (vs. 8-24)
We see that Abraham was the real deal man of God and everyone notices it (vs. 22-24)
Wisdom
God keeps His promises don’t doubt Him (vs. 1-3)
Many times troubles will distract us from our needed provisions (vs. 19)
We ought be so close to God that those around us know that we know God (vs. 22-24)
We see an example of communication break down (vs. 26)
* I didn’t know I did wrong
* You didn’t tell me
* I didnt know until things got bad
(We need to communicate so we don’t see this breakdown in our lives)
We see the example to call on the Lord (vs. 33)
