  • GU92 - S5E03 - Penguin, Our Hero

Penguin, Our Hero starts out people with mocking Penguin and ends up with them thanking him. However, people are still out to shut him down and take out Haven. Bat and Cat head to the Dark Zone to find Jeremiah but end up with an Ecco of Harley.

    Penguin, Our Hero:

A hero and savior is what Penguin is styling himself as, but a dictator is all he is to his people. They sing an anthem to him and Mr. Penn tells him only what he wants to hear. But then a choir member falls out and Oswald gets the bad news. People are working double shifts ,because people are defecting to the GCPD's Haven. Oswald tells Penn to stop it or it means his head. Some members of the Street Demonz gang enter and shoot up the place before being stopped. They say that Penguin has taken out the Demonz, Lo Boyz, and Undead gangs and left graffiti. Penguin says if it was him there would be no survivors and no proof. He sends them off to be tortured. The next day he awakes to only Olga, the housekeeper, singing to him. She says everyone has defected to Haven including his dog Edward. He wakes up the one Demonz member alive and tells him to round up what is left of the other gangs. They are going to attack Haven.

Harvey tells Jim that Haven is filling up and they have very little food and the ammo supply will not survive an attack. Jim breaks up a fight and lays down the ground rules to the new folks. His speech inspires hope and Bruce thanks him for it. But Jim is tired and loosing hope. Bruce takes him to talk with Will (who's friends they rescued last episode). Will has bad dreams and a broken arm because of it. Jim encourages him. Later at the GCPD they get word that Penguin's forces are coming for Haven. Jim sends Harvey to Barbara for help and takes the rest of the force to Haven.

Harvey finds Babs in the club and she is not happy. She tells Harvey that, Golden Boy Jim can be his own hero. Harvey says that Jim and Haven cannot stand without help. He says that Penguin and his forces are attacking. Babs says you should have lead with Penguin and they head to Haven.

Penguin, the Street Demonz, Lo Boyz, and Undead arrive at Haven. After two attacks, the GCPD are out of ammo and have to surrender. Jim is locked up. Jim asks Penguin to take things out on him, not the refugees. Penguin says his people will go back to being lead by him and the rest will go back to being the gangs' slaves. The gangs are dividing up the people and the Demonz want to kill Penn. Penguin stops them, but the leader shoots and kills Penn. He says they are going to take his turf and ammo factory. They lock Penguin up with Jim. As Jim and Penguin argue, Will comes in and slips them a can opener. They make a truce, free themselves and with the help of the GCPD take out the gangs. Jim settles the people down. He thanks Will for his help and standing up for him. He deputizes him. Outside Jim says they are even and lets Penguin go. About that time, Harvey & Babs show up. Babs is hell bent on killing Ozwald, but Jim stands in her way. Then explosions rock the entire Haven building.

Selina's No Hero and Jeremiah's A Cult Leader:

Selina is hell bent to find Jeremiah and end him. She and Bruce question one of the new refugees and find out there are rumors of Jeremiah in the Dark Zone, but that place is filled with lunatics. Bruce wants to be a hero and bring him to justice. But he will do anything to protect Selina. Even going into the Dark Zone. There they find the Mutants gang and Selina goes after the towering leader, while Bruce takes out everyone else. Selina literally beats Jeremiah's location out of the leader and has to be stopped by Bruce's grappling hook.

They head to Old Town and find that Jeremiah has a cult. Worshipers dress in black pants/skirts with white shirts and black ties. Jeremiah's right hand woman, Ecco, says that he is looking for people devoted and those willing can go upstairs. Selina steps up and heads up with the pilgrims. They are taken to an empty pool. Their test of faith is to form a circle and play Russian Roulette with the person in front of them. They fire and 3 pilgrims die. Ecco scolds Selina from stopping stopping the person behind her from firing. She dismisses the rest. She knows who Selina is because, Jeremiah's cult knows everything and everyone connected to Bruce Wayne. Ecco, who is dressed like Harley Quinn, says she wanted to see Selina test herself. Selina says you go first. Ecco shows a bullet wound. She shot herself and the bullet is still rattling around in there. Selina and Ecco begin to fight and Selina has the upper hand. Then Bruce comes in and tells her to stop. This distraction is all Ecco needs. She stabs Selina and escapes. Selina handcuffs Bruce to a grate, saying she is going to do things her way now.

    Closing Thoughts:

Penguin, Our Hero ramped up the action to 11. Penguin wanted to be a hero but failed. Jim was the people's hero, but faltered. Bruce tried to be a hero and keep Selina from going over the edge and failed. Selina didn't want to be a hero. She just wanted to kill Jeremiah. After the last two episodes we have learned that the Dark Zone is no place to be and how Haven is really that for the people of Gotham. Who is behind the attack on Haven? Is it the government's retaliation for Jim doing the rescue mission? I think it is Jeremiah's forces causing chaos and fear, like they did with shooting down the chopper. I'm exited to see what is next!

    Cougar's Comic Corner:

We talked about the Mutants' look and feel being right out of the Frank Miller classic "The Dark Knight Returns." This is a seminal work in the Batman lore. Check it out on Amazon or Comixology.

  • GU91 - S5E02 - Trespassers

Trespassers saw our heroes crossing lines to save what was dear to them. Jim and Harvey had to journey to save the children. Bruce had to journey to find a cure for Selina. Even Riddler made a journey to find himself. But will their trespassing hurt them in the long run?

Trespassers in the Dark Zone: ©2019 Fox Broadcasting Co. Cr: FOX

Jim and Harvey learn that the kid walked from the dark zone of Gotham. Kids are being taken and forced to tunnel. The mainland will not help or resupply the GCPD and tells Jim to stand down. Jim will not have it. He needs supplies. He goes to the Siren club and Barbara is furious. She clears out the club. She says Jim didn't do anything when Penguin killed Tabitha. Jim says he took him down. She says he just re-cripled him. She gives Jim his pick of vehicles and says Gotham is welcome to take Jim down.

The GCPD caravan makes it into the Dark Zone. They are attacked by crossbow arrows and molotov cocktails. Meanwhile the leader of the Soothsayers, Sykes, is mad at an older kid, Gabriel, because he didn't tell about the escape. They are trying to tunnel out of Gotham for supplies so they can run the city. Gabriel says they are hungry and exhausted. Sykes offers him his mask and tells him to take the Smoke. It will make him strong and even see the future. Gabriel refuses and is about to be shot when the GCPD show up. Sykes and the men go out and are surrounded. Jim frees the kids and gets them loaded up, but a firefight breaks out. Most of the trucks get away, but Jim, Harvey, Gabriel, and 2 others have to escape on foot.

They seek refuge in an old hotel. Jim goes to check out the upstairs and sends Harvey to the basement. Harvey finds trays of rings, teeth and valuables. Then he sees a body burning in the furnace and a tray of fingers with rings still on them. Mother attacks him and he runs upstairs. Jim finds a boy upstairs. He says a ghost found him after his parents were killed. She was nice at first, but can be mean. She wants to be called Mother. Harvey comes up and the boy sends them into a room. He locks them in to be knocked out by lights and then killed. Mother comes in and a fight ensues. Harvey knocks out a window and Jim questions her. She escapes and they grab the kids and leave.

They are about to leave when the Soothsayers and the other gang (who are painted like skeletons) trap them. They both want Jim's head for the Penguin's reward. Jim is down to 2 bullets and uses one to take out the Skeleton leader. Things look bad for the good guys, when a monster truck with a machine gun mows down both gangs. Babs has come to the rescue. Jim uses his last bullet to save her from Sykes. She wants to team up to kill Penguin.

They table it and take the kids to the place Lucius Fox set up. it is a 250 rooms with everything. Once the kids came people from all over the city have come to the Haven. Jim is their savior. Babs leaves saying they are not even and will talk later.

Trespassers in the Park: ©2019 Fox Broadcasting Co. Cr: FOX

Bruce is seeking The Witch and he finds the right spot in Robinson Park. The place is overgrown with plants. He enters the building and finds it covered in plant growth. He also sees the plants eating dead bodies. Some men come after him. They have captured The Witch and have sent for others. People came to her for help and she killed them. She speaks to the plants and they do her bidding. But they captured her in a room with no light, no water, and salt on the ground. Bruce says he needs 5 min. with her to find out what happened to his brother. They let him in. Bruce finds Ivy there. She says the park's plants are alive and talk with her. He says he needs her help to heal a friend. She knows of a seed in the park that can heal, but needs to get out.

Bruce takes her out and is trying to talk with the men, when she kills them all. She is feeding the park dead people and watching what grows. Bruce says the seed is for Selina. Ivy rejects him, because of what Selina did by destroying the Lazarus Water. But Bruce shows he is growing up and wise. He calls her out. She digs up the seed and says it will fuse the nerves and cartilage in Selina, if she is strong enough. But it will permanently change her. Letting the darker angels out.

Bruce hurries back to the hospital. Alfred says Selina has not spoken. Bruce shares that the seed is from Ivy and Alfred cautions him. Selina says she wants to die and if Ivy does it so be it. She takes the seed and then talks about how she took Ivy under her wing. She cared for her and will always see her as that little kid. The seed takes hold and she begins to seize. Later the doctor says her fever shot up and her white blood cell count went off the charts. After 2 hours she stabilized. She still had pain, but was OK. Bruce and Alfred are about to leave, when Bruce notices Ivy gone. She is out of bed and walking. She says she feels better than before. As Bruce hugs her, her eyes go dark green and change to the iris' of a cat.

Trespassers in a Turf War: ©2019 Fox Broadcasting Co. Cr: FOX

The Riddler is still not in full control. He locked himself down with chains and locks before bed. He wakes up still chained and is so happy. But as he is taking a leak he hears mumbling in the shower. He looks and says it is a hallucination. But the mumbling continues. Tank, a member of the Street Demonz, is chained up in his tub. Looks like Ed got out after all and tortured Tank for info. Riddler has to do the same to get that same info. Ed was looking for the Demonz secret hide out and if their leader would be there. Riddler and Tank go and find the place quiet. All of the people there are dead, including the gang leader. On the wall is graffiti saying "Penguin was here." Looks like Ed wants to start a turf war between the two gangs. Riddler is still in the dark and does not know what Ed wants.

    Closing Thoughts:

Trespassers was an interesting episode, but slower. It was a set up episode, but Trespassers moved several stories along. The changes to Selina will be explored next week, but are frightening. Ivy is crazy and powerful. Ed seems to be causing a turf war so he can take over, but will Riddler let him? Jim is being set up to be a savior. The mainland wants him to be a symbol of hope to Gotham, but Penguin might make him a martyr. I hope Trespassers was our only slower ep of the season. We will see.

    News:

Penguin, Our Hero: With the creation of Haven as a safe place for refugees, Gordon hopes to stop the gang fighting in Gotham. Meanwhile, Selina is determined to find Jeremiah (guest star Cameron Monaghan) and she convinces Bruce to help her. Then, Penguin goes to Haven to reclaim his staff in the all-new "Penguin, Our Hero" episode of GOTHAM airing Thursday, Jan. 17 (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX. (GTH-503) (TV-14 D, L, V)

  • Gotham Undercover 90 - Year Zero 1

Year Zero had us jump 13 months after the events of last season, but we were pulled back to 3 months. Gotham is desperate. Food and supplies are short. Villains control sectors of the city and only the GCPD & allies stand against them. Our heroes need help.

Year Zero - Zero help for the GCPD: ©2018 Fox Broadcasting Co. Cr: Giovanni Rufino / FOX

Jim and the GCPD have established Haven, a 10 block area around the station. They are feeding the refugees who could not get out of Gotham when the bridges were blown. But times are tough and supplies are running out. The city has been divided up between the people can wield power. Jim goes up nightly to turn on the signal. Bruce asks if he does it to remind people even in darkness there is light. Jim says yes and to remind himself. Jim has been communicating, via shortwave, with the government outside the city. But they will not send aid, rescue the children, or restock the GCPD's ammo supply.

After Scarecrow's raid thinks are dire. Bruce illegally calls in a supply chopper from the mainland. Harvey exclaims "Man, it's nice to have a billionaire around!" Hopes are raised as the chopper comes into town and Bruce sends them to the landing spot, but a RPG cripples it. It goes down in Lo Boyz turf and the GCPD must go get it.

The day has been saved for now. But supplies will run low again and the government won't let another Wayne re-supply happen again. Harvey questions why Jim didn't kill Penguin and save them some trouble. He says times have changed and it is kill or be killed. Jeremiah's equivalent of Harley Quinn has slipped into the station (probably not for the firs time) and looks at Jim's turf map. She leaves a cult of Joker graffiti on it. She slips into the background as Jim gets a shortwave call. A voice says they have supporters across the river and they will help, but they don't say who they are.

A young boy has made his way across the city and multiple sectors to get to Jim. He says his brothers and sisters are being killed. Jim gathers his officers and gives a stirring speech. "We're supposed to be giving these people hope. Hope that if they're in danger, someone will come. We will come. Suit up."

Year Zero - Villains At Odds: ©2018 Fox Broadcasting Co. Cr: Giovanni Rufino / FOX

Penguin has the turf around city hall but has also converted a factory to make bullets. Barbara & Tabitha have a safe zone for women around the Sirens Club and men can buy time there. They have no lack of food and booze. Scarecrow and his forces control the west, spreading fear. Mister Freeze and Firefly have the north but are fighting over it. The Lo Boyz gang are also a presence. But no one has heard from Jeremiah in 3 months.

Gotham's no man's land status is hurting everyone. Penguin wants meat and is willing to trade ammo for steak from the Sirens. Tabs is still out to kill Penguin, but Babs reigns her back in saying this trade will help the women survive. Penguin gets his steak, but he is not doing it for the people in his factory. Factory workers are passing out and the quality is suffering. Mr. Penn tries to convince him to give more rations, but Oswald will not have it. Even feeding his overcooked steak to his dog.

The Riddler is back alive, but not all is well. He keeps waking up after blackouts. He finds himself in locations radiating out from his home. He cannot figure out why. He knows it is Ed doing it, but he cannot get Ed to come out and confront him.

Scarecrow and his forces get inside the Haven district and divide up. Half the forces head to the GCPD and the rest go to the hospital. They take out the power at both locations. They then begin to raid the supplies. Jim fights Scarecrow and runs him off. Harvey runs the rest off, but not before they take 3 weeks of food. At the hospital, Bruce grabs his new night vision goggles, thanks to Lucius Fox, and heads to the basement. He is in Batman mode and takes out the thugs one by one. All is good until the lights come back on and temporality blind him and they get away.

The chopper has crashed landed in a warehouse and the Lo Boyz are unloading it. Penguin rolls in with his crew. They have guns and unlimited ammo and they easily take out the Boyz. But before they can load up, the GCPD have made it to the warehouse. Things are not going well for the GCPD when they get a helping hand. Tabitha takes out 2 of Penguin's goons with a crossbow and one with a knife. She then has Penguin. She is there to kill him and does not care if she lives. She is there to avenge Butch. She aims her gun and fires, but the bullet she has was from Penguin's supply and it misfires. Penguin pulls his boot knife and kills her. As she dies, Babs comes in screaming. Tabs says "Barbara don't" but it is too late. Babs empties her clip into Penguin's men. The GCPD fire too and exhaust their ammo.

Luckily Bruce followed them and takes out the thugs guarding the ammo truck. He restocks the GCPD. Jim tries to negotiate with Penguin. They'll split the supplies 50/50 and Barbara goes free. Penguin says no I'll take it all and leave you to think about it, since you have no ammo. Jim then shoots Penguin in his bad leg and the GCPD take out the rest.

Year Zero - Zero Hope For Selina & Bruce?: ©2018 Fox Broadcasting Co. Cr: Giovanni Rufino / FOX

Selina and Alfred never made it out of Gotham, they were caught in traffic when the bridges blew. She is stable at the hospital but if the doctor does not operate her spine will collapse. She agrees and Bruce says he will be there the whole time. A sketchy nurse tells Bruce that the doctors can't do anything for Selina. She needs the Witch. The surgery, even though it is interrupted by the Scarecrow crew, is a success. Selina is in pain. She is despondent because she knows she will never walk again. She sees a scalpel on an unguarded cart and goes for it, trying to kill herself. She is stopped by the doctor, nurse and Bruce. The sketchy nurse pokes her head in and says Selina needs the Witch. Bruce is desperate and asks where he can find the Witch. Will Year Zero for Bruce & Selina see the Bat & Cat as a team in Gotham or will it drive them to be enemies?

    Closing Thoughts:

Wow we got our final season, even though it is a short one. But they are starting it out with a bang! Year Zero was an interesting way to start the season. Jumping back and forth in time leaves us with questions. Will we continue jumping back and forth in time or will the jumps just be forward from now on? Who is the Witch? My bet is on Poison Ivy, but it could be Lee. Where is Lee? We know Riddler was brought back by Hugo Strange, so Lee must be around too. Who brought down the chopper with the RPG? They had to have info from the GCPD or Bruce to know about it, how? My bet is Jeremiah and his crew. So many questions! But I loved the start to this season. I hope every episode is as tightly written this season. Year Zero in the comics is retelling of origin stories. Gotham has been an Elseworlds version of the Batman story. This season is our version of Year Zero and titled Legend of The Dark Knight. Who knows how wild this short season will be!

    News:

First up is the info about next week via Fox: Trespassers - Gordon and Bullock investigate a location where several kids have been kidnapped. Barbara proves to be an unlikely ally to Gordon. Meanwhile, Bruce looks into an alleged witch with healing powers for Selina, and Nygma deals with demons of his own in the all-new "Trespassers" episode of GOTHAM airing Thursday, Jan. 10 (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX. (GTH-502) (TV-14 L, V)

    Here is the promo:

Next up is Batwoman news via TVLine: Good news for the 60 percent of you who voted in favor of a Batwoman series: The CW has officially handed a pilot order to the project, which stars Orange Is the New Black's Ruby Rose in the title role. Rose's Batwoman debuted in last month's multi-part Arrowverse crossover event "Elseworlds." The CW also announced that Arrow/Flash vet David Nutter will direct the pilot. Slated for a potential Fall 2019 premiere, Batwoman would follow Kate Kane — the second incarnation of the Batwoman character in DC Comics lore, introduced in 2006 — who is described as "an out lesbian and highly trained street fighter" who is "primed to snuff out the failing city's criminal resurgence." Other characters reportedly being cast for the prospective series include Kate's father, Colonel Kane; Batwoman's Victorian Era-styled archenemy, Alice; and one that sounds like Renee Montoya.

If CW picks up Batwoman, Gotham Undercover will be there to cover it!

Other characters reportedly being cast for the prospective series include Kate's father, Colonel Kane; Batwoman's Victorian Era-styled archenemy, Alice; and one that sounds like Renee Montoya.

If CW picks up Batwoman, Gotham Undercover will be there to cover it!

  • Gotham Undercover Extra 6

Elseworlds was this year's CW crossover. But this year we saw a new character introduced, Batwoman. Flash, Green Arrow and Supergirl make their way to Gotham City investigating John Deegan. Batwoman is not happy to have them in her city. Due to the epic nature of the crossover, the GSM shows did a mega podcast roundtable.

    Elseworlds:

At the end of night one of the crossover, we found out that Dr. John Deegan was given the book by the Monitor and was in Gotham City. After detouring though Star City, Ollie-Flash, Barry-Arrow and Supergirl head over to Gotham. They run into some muggers and are taken into custody by the GCPD. They are sprung and taken to Wayne Tower. There they are greeted by Kate Kane. She has taken over the tower and offers to let them use it. They learn from her that Deegan is over Arkham and head over there for answers.

Cisco, Kaitlin, and Diggle show up filling them in on the appearance of Earth 90's Flash and the message. Kara & Kaitlin distract the staff. Barry & Oliver confront Deegan, who frees the inmates and escapes. In a battle with an inmate Scarecrow's fear toxin is spilt and Arrow & Flash battle each other thinking they are battling Merlin & Thawne. Batwoman comes to save the day. In Arkham we had shout outs to Mister Freeze, Scarecrow, Penguin, Poison Ivy, Clayface, Riddler, Psycho-Pirate and the Luke Fox a.k.a. Batwing.

Elseworlds - Batwoman Saves The Day:

Elseworlds saw the formal introduction of Batwoman and the city of Gotham into the CW Flarrowverse. It seems that Bruce/Batman left Gotham 3 years ago and it fell to pieces. Wayne Enterprises fell and so did the city. They seem to be canonizing that this is the Nolan Batman's Gotham. But Bruce's cousin Kate Kane is on the job as Batwoman. It seems even she doesn't know where Batman went. But she is there to protect her city. All the drama that our heroes are bringing is making things worse. She just wants them out of the city. However she and Supergirl are World's Finest in her eyes. They both know each other's secret identities. Our heroes may have left Gotham, but we have not seen the last of Batwoman.

    Summary:

Elseworlds was a fun crossover that checked so many boxes for the fans. Part 1 gave us Smallville shout outs and a battle with Amazo (seen in many of the animated series). Part 2 gave us the canonization of 90's Flash, a Green Lantern Diggle, and Batwoman. Part 3 was an alt-Superman vs Superman battle with Arrow making a bargain with the Monitor. We all felt part 3 was the weakest and Supergirl's show got hijacked. But the setup for next year's Crisis on Infinite Earths has us pumped. It was also a blast to do a crossover podcast with Arrow Squad, Central City Underground and Maid of Steel. With 7 podcasters and a ton of listener feedback it was a fun, but late night. We hope you enjoy the podcast!

    Cougar's Comic Corner:

Karen and several of us talked about characters and plot points in Elseworlds that are teeing us off for Crisis. It is a good time to pick up this volume and get a sneak peak of what we may be in store for next fall.
