Digital technologies can support the delivery of quality aged care and enable growth and innovation.  However, there are financial, operational, strategic and, clinical risks to be considered. To be effective leaders we must learn to carefully balance innovation and risk to ensure that ensuring quality care remains the primary objective.

In this episode, Professor Sue Gordon, Professor of Health and Ageing, Flinders University and Research Director at the Aged Care Research and Industry Innovation Australia (ARIIA), explores how leaders in aged care can foster a culture of risk proportionate innovation. We also discuss how research can be used to inform decision making and identify opportunities for innovation.

Strategic planning is key to successfully implementing change, especially during a period of sector transformation. Strategy and compliance are often discussed and treated separately by governing bodies, however legislative reform offers an opportunity for compliance to be embedded within an organisations strategy. 

In this episode, Bernadette Gotch, the CEO of home care provider KinCare, will explore how reforms can be a driver of organisational strategy as she discusses why an understanding of reforms is fundamental as a leader in the sector.

This episode features Danijela Hlis who is a vocal advocate for the lives and care of people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds in aged care. She shares her views on how governing bodies can foster inclusive culture at organisations to help create services that deliver safe and inclusive care to older people and their families. 

Danijela is a member of the Council of Elders and is actively involved with the Centre for Cultural Diversity, Ethnic Communities Council of Queensland (ECCQ), the Older Persons Advocacy Network (OPAN), Federation of Ethnic Communities Councils of Australia (FECCA), is a Dementia Australia advocate and participates in dementia and aged care related research through universities, NARI and NHMRC.

As a member of the Council of Elders, Val advises the Government on the quality and safety of aged care services, as well as advocating for the needs and rights of older Australians. Val is also an active ambassador for the Older Peoples Advocacy Network (OPAN), Dementia Australia and the Council on the Ageing (COTA). Val also holds the title as the oldest person at an Australian university, where she is studying a Bachelor of Dementia Care.

Research has shown that senior Australians want to remain at home for as long as possible and want to be supported to manage the risks associated with staying at home for longer. Amidst an ever evolving sector, governing bodies now more than ever need to be aware of consumers expectations to live independently, be treated with dignity and respect and to be involved in decisions about their own care. This understanding should drive strategic planning and make the most of emerging opportunities in aged care to meet the needs of older Australians. This has more recently seen an increased focus in the sector for the delivery of in-home aged care as the sector prepares for a system redesign.

In this episode, Glenn Powers the CFO of myHomecare Group, discusses his experiences as an executive leader of a home care provider and some of the challenges in delivering home care services through a period of sector change.

Understanding the key differences between the responsibilities of the Board and the Executive is essential to effective governance. Changing needs of the sector require governing body members to be agile, which can see people transition between different roles.

This episode will explore the transition of a governing body member from the board into an executive role. Chris Stewart transitioned into the CEO role of Helping Hand and will share his experiences and lessons learnt having been both a board member and now chief executive officer. 

Chris Stewart has extensive executive level leadership experience across diverse sectors including professional services, financial services and healthcare and has experience in corporate governance for over 20 years.  Chris was a Board Director of Helping Hand for nine years and chaired the Finance and Property Committee from 2012 to 2015. In 2019 he took on the position as the CEO of Helping Hand.
