  • Second COVID-19 vaccine booster

More than 6 months ago, the National Immunization Program introduced a booster dose to individuals 18 years and older, 4 to 6 months after having received the primary series.

As COVID-19 continues to evolve and new variants emerge, there is a need to consider a second booster for certain high-risk groups. A booster provides added protection by increasing the level of immunity against the virus.

  • Ministry of Health stresses importance of hand hygiene

The Bureau of Health Education within the Ministry of Health, Wellness and Elderly Affairs is currently undertaking a series of hand hygiene educational sessions in various schools around the island aimed at sensitizing the young children about the importance of hand washing.

The initiative provides students with the opportunity to be educated in a fun and interactive way on the proper way to wash hands and gaining an appreciation for the benefits of hand washing.

Family Life Educator in the Bureau of Health Education Shirlan Edward spoke on the need to target the younger children to ensure they build healthy habits.

“We targeted that section of the population because we felt it was important because it is a bigger cross-section of the population. They are able to go to their homes and educate their parents and their care takers. They are more receptive to the information in learning and understanding. We are more able to teach and instill in them the proper hand washing practices and the purpose for hand washing especially now with the increase in COVID-19 cases, the infection rate is high, so we felt it fitting that we should target the schools.”

Family Life Educator in the Bureau of Health Education, Amelia Charles, says it is extremely important that children practice good hand washing behaviors. “Hand hygiene is very important when it comes to infection prevention and control. What happens is since our hands is our first point of contact when we speaking to people or when eating or various activities we engage in, we use our hands a lot. It is very important that we remind the little ones or we teach them the proper way of washing their hands. It is important that we remind the little ones or remind them of the many times they have to wash their hands and way it is important that they wash their hands.”

The hand hygiene educational activity in the schools is supported by the World Bank through the Health Systems Strengthening Project HSSP.

  • CARPHA pays courtesy call to Saint Lucia

The Management Team of the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) recently paid a courtesy call on the Minister for Health, Wellness and Elderly Affairs Hon. Moses Jn Baptiste.

The visit provided an opportunity to discuss environmental health matters and ways in which sustainable development issues impact public health.

Executive Director of CARPHA Dr. Joy St. John said the visit will allow the team to assess the work being done at the Environmental Health and Sustainable Development department located in Saint Lucia and to highlight ways in which CARPHA can continue to provide support.

“The Environmental Health and Sustainable Development Department ensures that the work we do is truly relevant to the Caribbean. That is the outcome of the first mission. The outcome of the second mission was to interact with Saint Lucia. The Minister, the Permanent Secretary and the CMO pinpointed clear and specific goals about what Saint Lucia needs going forward.”

Hon. Moses Jn Baptiste says he is very pleased with the visit as it provided an avenue to discuss pertinent environmental health issues which can hinder human health and wellness.

“This morning we discussed many issues relating to environmental health and how environmental health can be integrated into the public health measures and public health programmes here in Saint Lucia and the Caribbean. We also looked at the developments in respect to data and how CARPHA is reevaluating its programmes and putting in place a number of new programmes which will help Saint Lucia and the other Caribbean countries to access data and to have quality data which will certainly help us with our discussions when it comes to public health matters.”

The team from CARPHA also met with the Chief Medical Officer Dr. Sharon Belmar-George and the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health Jenny Daniel.
