Joshua wants Moses to stop two elders who are speaking the word of the Lord outside the Tabernacle (Numbers 11). John wants Jesus to stop a stranger from healing people in Jesus’ name (Mark 9). Both Moses and Jesus reply that God can and does speak and act through people outside our particular faith communities. Are we listening to these prophets of the Lord?

Jesus teaches that wisdom from above is welcoming and serving the least of these (Mark 9:30-37). James writes that wisdom from above is pure and peaceable, kind and reasonable, lovingly active, impartial and authentic (James 3:13-4:3). How might we live in this wisdom from above today?

Jesus the Messiah is not what Peter and the other disciples expect (Mark 8:27-38). He did not come to conquer through violent force - he came to save through sacrificial love. What are our expectations of Jesus? Who do we say he is? And how might we follow him today?

“Can faith save you?” James 2:14 asks. Lutherans answer with a resounding “yes,” and the faith that saves is never alone. We express our faith in Christ by doing the good work of Christ. How do we – and how might we – express our faith in these challenging times?

"Peace I leave with you, my peace I give you" (John 14:27) - the words spoken by Jesus to his disciples to get them through the challenges they faced. May we hear these words of Jesus spoken to us today as we face the challenges of these difficult times. May we have the peace of Christ in our lives.

In Ephesians 6:10-20, the Apostle Paul calls on his fellow followers of Christ to stand firm against evil and for good. In the days of Paul, and in ours, this is a hard fought battle. Paul reminds us we are not alone, our strength is in the Lord, and God will give us the power to overcome evil with good.
